Donors who powered the school’s agility and innovation

Unrestricted donations to INSEAD are among the most valued gifts, conveying strong trust in the leadership’s direction of the school. The flexibility of their use allows the Dean the freedom to allocate funds to areas important to the school’s success.

In 2015/2016 unrestricted gifts to the school’s General Endowment spiralled, as did those to the Dean’s Annual Fund. The impact on the General Endowment is long-term, strengthening our financial foundation and providing the school with discretionary funds in perpetuity. Our thanks to all donors who are investing in the school’s future in this way.

Gifts to the Dean’s Annual Fund provide immediate support for activities and initiatives that enhance our excellence and reputation. The number of donors to the Dean’s Annual Fund is increasing year-on-year. Over 600 donors gave to the Fund in 2015/2016, almost an 80% increase on the year before.

“The Dean’s Annual Fund helped us to set up a mobile pop-up laboratory in Singapore to collect experimental and survey data, which is available to all INSEAD researchers. Now we are able to capture professionals in high traffic locations, providing us with targeted, quality data.”

“Thank you for your support of INSEAD. Your gift makes a real difference in that we get to attract the best and brightest from around the world. Students see scholarships as a very tangible recognition of the contribution they are expected to make at INSEAD. It energises them and allows us to welcome a very diverse student body.”

Urs Peyer — Dean of Degree Programmes

Individual alumni, returning reunion classes, friends and corporations made 2015-2016 one of the best years for contributions to scholarships. The outpouring of support highlighted our community’s belief and engagement in INSEAD’s values of diversity and excellence.

Donors strengthened the message that INSEAD is the Business School for the World, by making the MBA programme accessible to more students from Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas. Their generosity also enabled more women to join INSEAD programmes.

The endowed and current scholarships from the year are also allowing INSEAD to compete better against peer institutions in attracting the best talent.

“I am deeply grateful for your personal support which enabled the Society for Progress in 2016 to award inaugural Progress Medals for research and leadership advancing fairness and well-being in the economic system.

Your stature and integrity reflect on the medals and will help accelerate intellectual and practical attention to moral dilemmas emergent in our modern economy.”

Associate Professor of Organisational Behaviour

“iLITE’s goal is to make sure INSEAD remains at the forefront of educating managers and leaders. Sustaining teaching excellence among our faculty, and supporting ongoing innovation in what they teach and how, the iLITE helps INSEAD provide a valuable and transformational learning experience to every student.

Our sincere thanks to Guthrie Stewart, Alex Manson and the Beaucourt Foundation for supporting iLITE’s activities. Your gifts are making it possible for us to expand our services to faculty on both the Europe and Asia campuses and to upgrade facilities in ways that will help deepen and accelerate the learning of students and faculty alike.”

Donors who enhanced the INSEAD brand and learning environment

Donor support in 2015-2016 enabled INSEAD to better showcase its history, values and global network and enabled the school to provide transformative experiences. The July 2016 MBA graduation ceremony, with students in graduation attire, was held on the beautiful grounds of the Château de Fontainebleau and broadcast online.

Facilities on both the Europe and Singapore campuses were upgraded and enhanced with donor investment.

“I am a 29-year old Nigerian from a family of seven and have lived in my home country for most of my life. I studied chemical engineering as a first degree, after which I worked in project management and marketing communications. I had always desired a business education and wanted to get an MBA from a top-notch business school. What INSEAD offered was a perfect fit for my personal and career development plans. But I knew it would come at a huge cost, which I could not afford. You can imagine the joy I felt when I was notified of this scholarship award, on my birthday last year!

Thanks to this life-changing scholarship, I can focus on getting a world-class business education as I look forward to leading the change required to spur economic development in Africa and the world at large. I strongly believe the INSEAD experience will be a major value-add and my expectations have been surpassed since arriving on campus in Fontainebleau.

Your generosity has inspired me and I anticipate opportunities not only to raise awareness about this scholarship but also to get directly involved in giving back.”

“I am really looking forward to a year of reflection, enlightenment and inspiration at INSEAD and would like to express my sincere thanks and gratitude for making this unique opportunity possible for me. Without this generous scholarship, it would never have been possible for me to afford INSEAD, given my prior background working for a startup. Your support is a living testimony to how special the INSEAD community is, and I am proud to be a new member of this extended but close-knit family. Words will not suffice to express my gratitude; I will try my utmost to pay your generosity forward by supporting future generations of INSEAD students.”

“When I started preparing to meet INSEAD’s requirements, I realised that my savings would not be enough to cover the tuition fee, due to the slump in value of Russian roubles. Until the last moment, my husband and I were not sure that we would nd scholarships and loans to support my education, because there were no such aids on offer in Russia. It was a very bright moment when I received a mail that I had been awarded an INSEAD scholarship. We jumped with joy like kids that morning. I can say from my own experience that this scholarship gives people a chance to change their lives.”

“I am in the first generation in my family to complete high school and the only member of my family to graduate from tertiary education. I am speechless that I was accepted to complete my MBA at INSEAD! The scholarship funds have given me the opportunity to make the most of my year at INSEAD. For example, I was able to attend the Entrepreneurship bootcamp. I am also using the funds to assist with my accommodation expenses. I live in Avon with 10 of my peers from all corners of the globe, which is a unique experience in itself. I am extremely grateful for this assistance and I am not taking a moment here for granted.”
Investing in the world through INSEAD

Dear Donors,

In September 2015, the World Bank announced that for the first time fewer than 10 percent of the global population is living in absolute poverty, compared to nearly a third of humanity 25 years ago. Global business, particularly in Asia, has played a significant role in the rapid economic growth that has raised the living standards for millions of people.

This inspiring news highlights the message that business can be a ‘force for good’. It also underscores the importance of our mission to educate an expanding community of global leaders who will help develop a prosperous, peaceful and sustainable world.

To realise our aims, we are privileged to partner with you, our donors, who share our values and vision. Now, more than ever, you can be confident that INSEAD is a vehicle through which your philanthropic investments will have global reach and scope. Your investments in the school in 2015/2016 amounted to a record high of €23.8 million in gifts and pledges, an impressive 67% increase over last year.

Your collective gifts have influenced all strategic areas of the school, and beyond. The upsurge of unrestricted gifts to General Endowment and the Dean’s Annual Fund provided us with unprecedented flexibility to invest in the school. Your support of scholarships enabled the school to increase and diversify our offering to potential scholars, extending our reach to talented women and men from around the world. You also helped us advance research and teaching – particularly in the areas of family business, entrepreneurship, social progress and economic growth. You reinforced the school’s branding and facilities, which again will increase the influence that INSEAD can have across the globe. Support that comes to INSEAD moves through this institution to impact the world in a manner about which we are deeply proud and grateful.

A high point of the year was the extraordinary support we received from several board members, led by Chairman Andreas Jacobs. I must extend my special thanks to each of them for leading by example and investing so generously in our school. The impressive rise in gifts over the last years also owes much to the commitment and inspirational work of Leonidas Los, who completed his mandate as the Chair of the INSEAD Alumni Fund (IAF) in 2016. My personal thanks to him and a warm welcome to Emma Goltz, who takes over as the IAF Chair. I must also thank Joanne Shoveller, who stepped down as Associate Dean for Advancement and Alumni Relations, for her significant contribution to these results. My gratitude to our dedicated faculty and staff, who work daily to perpetuate INSEAD's mission in the world.

To all donors, alumni, friends, corporations and foundations: please accept my sincere thanks. With your philanthropic investment and our collective commitment, we are empowering INSEAD to become an increasingly crucial driver in the global movement of business as a force for good. You and INSEAD are an indelible part of this movement, and we are all stronger together.

With my deepest gratitude,

Ilian Mihov

Dean of INSEAD

Transforming our school

Dear fellow alumni and friends,

I am honoured to have been appointed Chair of the INSEAD Alumni Fund (IAF) from 1 January 2017. I feel truly privileged to take on this position, given the hugely important role that fundraising plays in the future of our school. The INSEAD community is a remarkable one and I’m very excited for the years to come.

The year that I spent at INSEAD had a profound impact on my life, both professionally and personally. Some of my dearest friends are from that time and my husband Fred was a fellow MBA student. When I was at INSEAD in the ’98J promotion, the Singapore campus had just been announced. It seemed like a crazy idea to those of us deep in our MBA year at Fontainebleau. Today Singapore is a thriving part of the INSEAD programme and has been joined by Abu Dhabi. It is wonderful to see the school thriving. Our number 1 ranking by the Financial Times two years in a row is not a uke. It is the result of a strong research reputation earned through many years of hard work by the faculty. New INSEAD graduates are nding opportunities all over the world and are in high demand.

Maintaining this position and our research excellence will need continued investment in our faculty and the future of the school. INSEAD has only a small endowment relative to its peers and is not attached to a major university. It is quite extraordinary that a school founded in a forest in France by some visionary HBS alumni has had such remarkable success. Nevertheless, every year we lose strong applicants when we are unable to offer them scholarships.

The vision of the INSEAD founders is as relevant today as it was when the rst MBA class graduated in 1960. Creating the next generation of business leaders who will bring the unique global perspective of INSEAD to the world is vital. Alumni support for the school is essential to ensure that INSEAD will continue to excel and reach new heights in the future. There are so many opportunities to get involved: you can change the life of a student by supporting a scholarship, contribute to knowledge breakthroughs by giving to research, strengthen the school’s nancial foundation by contributing to the endowment, or simply make a gift to the Dean’s Annual Fund. Wherever you choose to direct your gift, you can be sure that you have made a positive difference.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Leonidas Los, MBA’75, for his inspirational leadership of the IAF over the past six years and for his invaluable advice and support in my rst few months as IAF chair. Many successful initiatives were started during Leonidas’s time, including the innovative Investors’ Circle, and he and his wife Eirini are true friends of INSEAD. I look forward to working with the Dean, the Board, the Advancement Team and of course the IAF volunteers and all members of the IAA and NAAs. I hope to meet many of you in person over the coming months.

Thank you for your support.

“Access to education is the key to a better future. It changes lives. I have benefited from this privilege and want to ensure I pay it forward for the next generation. Education is one of the highest impact investments to make a difference in sustainable economic growth, and higher education the most leveraged way of achieving this, grooming future leaders who understand that it is not only about running high performing organisations but also ensuring they do so with impeccable ethics and values that are balanced, culturally aware and respectful. That is why I give to INSEAD.”

“We think of INSEAD with love and affection! It was our INSEAD connection that brought us together. One year, a very special year, gave us a lifetime of learning, friends and family. Even today as we move to new places, we look up alumni in the city and there is an instant connection. We are grateful for what we have and we give back each year to provide such opportunities to as many others as possible. Thank you INSEAD for being open, candid and always responsive.”

"Spending a year at INSEAD changed my life. Working, discussing, studying, and celebrating with a student body from all over the world was an eye-opener for me. I am truly grateful for this pivotal experience that still shapes my life 20 years on. Helping others who might not be as lucky as I was, to have this same opportunity is something I do not even have to think twice about. INSEAD is unique in its diversity and openness to the world and thus for me plays a fundamental role in progress and peace in the world."

“Contributing to society through INSEAD is meaningful to me. If I don’t contribute, who will? If I defer or postpone, when will the right time come? What is a small fraction of what I earn to make such a big difference to someone’s life?”
